Wellington and the Peninsular War
Visit to Lord Wellington's Headquarters

Throughout his five and some what years as Commander-in-Chief during the Peninsular War, Wellington and his staff stayed in many places in both Portugal and Spain. The Society has, over the three decades discovered some of the houses in villages and towns where he lived. Even more exciting is that the great Duke is still fondly remembered as stories of him have been passed down from generation to generation. In one small town on the border there hangs a portrait of Wellington in the town hall.

With permission we enter the dining room where he invited his officers for dinner, a kitchen and huge fireplace where he kept himself warm in the serve winter months and a bedroom and balcony given over to him during his stay. The Society offers these visits as an option to the battlefield tours and therefore can be added to your itinerary if you wish to get close to the great general!  At least one visit to a residence of Wellington is highly recommended.
